This is a historical novel set in Georgian England, it is centred around the lives of two women with different backgrounds and personalities who have one important thing in common. The main character is a poor seventeen year old working girl who has to leave her newborn daughter, Clara, at the London Foundling Hospital, as she does not have the resources to look after her. The narrative tells of what happens when six years later she returns to retrieve Clara.
The book is easy to read, clearly written and atmospheric, it is grounded in historical facts about the Foundling Hospital and gives a clear impression of what it would have been like for a mother to leave her child there.
I am looking forward to reading Stacy Halls' next book, this is her second novel.
