I haven’t read The Familiars (despite having owned it since it came out) but I remember the huge hype around it. So when this came up on Readers First I was so excited. I began reading it as soon as I could and it had me captured immediately. I have to admit I had never heard of The Foundling hospital until this book, but learning about it through Bess’s story is heartbreaking. That mothers would wish to give their child to the hospital even if they wanted their child because they simply couldn’t afford to be a parent. I found it really harrowing. Then when Bess saves for six years and goes back to claim her baby, to find out she’s already been claimed, I was in tears. I was heartbroken for her.
I don’t want to say more about the plot, because of spoilers, but this was truly an incredible piece of historical fiction. Highly recommend.
