Set in old world London in a time hard for humanity, more so for women, it captures you straight away and draws you in to the page.
Bess is a likeable character but I feel also a complex individual with many sides to her and more than the one story here; her dead mother, her remaining family, her work, her “friendly” relations, her baby etc. Certainly someone I want to know more about.
I spent some time having to google certain words (hawking, crossing sweepers etc) although an additional challenge to the read, they are completely relevant, bringing the characters and setting to life. Beyond this issue, appears an easy read, flowing well, and each page providing enough intrigue, detail and plot to keep you wanting to read on
