Set in London in 1754, Bess Bright has been living six years without her child having left her at the foundling hospital. She is confident that she will soon be able to reclaim the daughter she has never really known but when she revisits the hospital, fearing that she may have passed away, she is told that she has already been claimed by Bess herself. Confused and upset, Bess has to find out who has taken her Clara and why.

This book had me hooked and heartbroken from the very beginning. I couldn’t even begin to imagine having to leave my child at the foundling without ever knowing if I would be able to see them and claim them once they could be supported. Stacey Halls has written this beautifully and the story is compelling, suspenseful and heart wrenching. I was captivated by Bess’ story and all of the characters have their own stories to tell. I liked the story-telling from the POV of both women characters in order for us to delve deeper into each of their lives and invest in both sides.

An interesting, intriguing and captivating historical fiction read. I enjoyed The Familiars but feel that this is the better of the two I have read so far. Mrs England has been purchased so I’m wondering whether it will be able to knock The Foundling off the top spot?!
