I completely devoured this book! I loved it! A beautifully written piece of literature, set in London in 1754, with fantastic characters and an emotionally-driven plot line - what’s not to love?!
Bess Bright leaves her illegitimate daughter at a local Foundling Hospital, and six years later she returns to reclaim her. Only to discover that Clara was claimed six years previous, by someone assuming Bess’ identity. So where is her daughter now?
This book centers on two women, from two very different backgrounds and social standings, and one child. Alexandra is a reclusive young widow, raising a child on her own in the best way that she can. These two women’s lives collide when Bess assumes the role of Alexandra’s child, Charlotte’s, nurse maid. Convinced that Charlotte is her daughter Clara this is a thoroughly emotive read, encompassing the themes of motherhood, class, revenge, hardship and love.
The book is divided between the first-person narrative of the two women, which is really effective, as we see the story told from two very different perspectives and feel more invested in these women’s lives. It’s all essential in a story like this to experience the internal monologue of these women, to enable the readers of empathize with their situations and to fully understand their struggles. This book was such an immersive read, I really just want to read it all over again, which is quite rare for me! A well-deserved 5⭐️!
