I found this book quite slow paced and that made it a bit boring to read. I found I kept putting it aside and reading other things in between. The idea of the story was a good one but sadly I didn't think the writing produced its full potential. Written in a heavily descriptive way, sometimes there was more description than substance of the actual story. The opening chapter telling of the Foundling hospital have the book a promising start. It offered the reader a historical idea of a time when young unmarried mother's often gave up their children. The idea of the rich standing by and viewing it as a pastime was interesting, but after that it tales off a bit for me.
I was disappointed that unlike 'The Familiars' this book did not grip me.
