The extract that I read of this book is based within the Victorian Era, set in the backdrop of poverty stricken London. This book begins with a mother's abandonment of her child to the Foundling Hospital, and her vow to return to her later in her life.
This premise is one that I found really compelling. As someone who was a huge fan of the Hetty Feather series as a child, the setting of the Foundling Hospital is what initially enticed me into reading this extract. The language and imagery used works perfectly to consolidate the Victorian setting: the dusty and impoverished environment that is punctuated by occasional luxury and wealth. The way in which the inside of the Foundling Hospital was described, with its contrasting luxury, was really beautiful.
The only criticism I have of the extract that I read is that the explanation of Bessie's family dynamic could have been more clear.
Besides that, I really enjoyed it.
