One of the reasons I enjoyed this story so much is the history behind it. After reading, I almost immediately went online to research more about London's Foundling Hospital, to read more about it. Most mothers who had to leave their babies behind in the Foundling Hospital were able to pick their children up after some time, but there were regulations on how to do it, and it was often a pretty complicated process. The Hospital in the background of the plot added the little bit of something that kept this book interesting. The story follows a young woman who is forced to give up her child and has to work for financial stability in order to get her child back. It delves into the complexities of motherhood, that special relationship between mother and child that goes beyond financial support and security. The mystery - her child not being there when she comes back to get her - makes this an intriguing page-turner. An additional element of the story that I liked is this tension between the upper and lower class that Bess encounters multiple times on her journey to find her child. This is a great book for lovers of mystery, with a surprisingly emotional element that some readers will relate to.
