The Foundling is a book that has been well researched and very well written.

It is a true example of social history, dealing with extreme poverty in Eighteenth century London.

Bess is a poor single shrimp seller who gives her illegitimate daughter to the Foundling Hospital On the day she was born because she knew she could not afford to care for her. Alexandra is an affluent young widow who is traumatised by the violent death of her parents 30 years previously and has become an agoraphobic recluse.

The story is about which of these two women should bring up the child.

As with Stacy Hall’s previous book, The Familiars, it was a delight to read this fast paced book. The setting, language and characters were all authentic to the time it was set in.

I look forward to her next book Mrs England which is to be set in Yorkshire during the Edwardian period.
