I thoroughly enjoyed The Familiars and delighted to discover that The Foundling is equally as captivating.

The Foundling is essentially a story of a mother’s love and class division in London in the 1700’s. It follows the story of Bess and Alexandra, the only thing they share in common is the absence of their own mothers. Whilst one can offer nothing but undying love, the other can offer wealth but a life of isolation for a young child.

The story poses the all two familiar question, does money really buy happiness?

I really enjoyed the striking contrast between the characters. Alexandra is a character that is hard to bond with. She is deeply troubled and complex and it is often hard to find reason in her actions. Bess however is a hard working, kind hearted girl and despite falling on hard luck remains mostly positive.

Halls is due to drop another book this summer so keep your eyes peeled!
