I can't say I really enjoyed the First Impression but hopefully the book will improve when our lead character (already I've forgotten her name which can't be good) gets to Cornwall and starts looking for her mother's family - her mother's estranged family by the sound of things. I'm sure she'll find nothing good there that's for sure.

It's all a little bit depressing which is unusual for a book set during this time period. Usually there is a warmth to the characters and a stoicism that lifts the horror of war and civilian bombing but there is little of that here.
