On leaving St Thomas Hospital to return home Trainee Nurse April Harvey is caught up in the Blitz. Her beloved Father is killed and April is all alone. She transfers to Truro as her dead mother was born and raised there hoping to find any family she may have left.
April lodges with Mrs Teague and continues to train at Truro Hospital. She makes friends with a group of nurses and begins to feel at home. But not all her new friends are as trustworthy as she believes. Things change for the worse within April's group when the American G.I's arrive and April finds romance with Major Crawford Dunbar. I really liked April and felt happy and sad with her as the story unfolded. The description of life for Black G.Is and how they were treated so badly mostly by the White G.Is was awful.
At first I thought this would be a lightweight fluffy read but it wasn't. It had everything I wanted in a book and will look out for other books by Eileen Ramsey.
