This is another story about a family's trouble and hardship set around the time of the Second World War which are very popular with women of a certain age.
I am not yet of that age and find them rather bland and predictable although the reader can always be sure of a happy ending.
The title and picture on the cover are meant to entice readers to buy the book however the gingerbread man only warrants a couple of mentions in passing in the book.
The book is padded out with news reports of the progress of the war although nothing graphic or nasty which happens to the characters in the book are described in any detail (deaths, injuries and imprisonment etc).
This is a 'nice' story which is well written but not exactly enthralling.
