A dark and disturbing story of female friendships, or perhaps more accurately female rivalry, and the lengths that people go to in trying to protect themselves.

It is particularly difficult to write a review of this book without giving too much away. It covers the subject of female relationships; friends and enemies, which are often hard to distinguish, boyfriends and lovers, sisters, all intertwined with peer pressure and the need to fit in.

It is very Americanised, so in parts was difficult to relate to but the message was clear regardless. I had to ask what the author had either experienced in her life, or perhaps witnessed, to make her push her message across so forcefully.

I was very split by the time I finished this book. It did not end how I wanted to and I felt strangely wronged, which is a very odd feeling to have when you get to the conclusion of a novel. In retrospect and in considering the emotions that the story evoked, I think this is because of how well it has been written and is a testament to the author, regardless of whether or not I felt the ending is fair.
