I knew I was going to like this book from the cover – it really gives off that moody mean girls vibe that runs throughout the entire plot. Flynn has given us a world that is real, deep, dark and chillingly relatable to girls who experienced the effects of bullying and all the nastiness that comes with people trying to compete in the school popularity stakes. It was so well written that it almost didn’t feel like it was a novel, but more of something you’d see on the news (it would definitely make a great tv crime drama!) I was almost frightened by this book but that didn’t stop me being so engrossed that I couldn’t leave it alone and I found it easy to keep up with the jumps between past and present and I have never felt so conflicted between loving and hating a narrator before – at times we are sympathetic towards and at others we are left waiting for karma to come back and bite her in the arse. I don’t want to go into too much more detail and risk giving any spoilers away but essentially this is full of drama, insecurities, love triangles, ultimate betrayals, all smothered in manipulative actions which had horrific consequences (feel should quickly add a trigger warning that this does have some scenes which certain readers may find distressing – a rape and a suicide) as well as references to drug-taking, alcohol abuse and bad language. All this being said, it’s a great story, well written and well developed characters.
