I wasn't sure what to expect with the blurb but the first few chapters certainly lay it out for you. It has the feel of a young adult fantasy adventure book, but with difficult themes in a dark and ominous setting. I like fantasy and this has an intriguing first impression for sure, but I don't think I would pick it up over the rest of my to be read pile. It would have been spot on for me 10 years ago though!
