‘A girl stole what happiness she could when no one was looking. That was how she won.’

This book is so gripping and devastating at the same time, and I long to read the stories of Clementine and Aster and see them happy and free - for them and all the other girls. It’s such a difficult topic, but so far it seems to be handled well, and I love the voice. It conveys the trauma of the girls and is emotionally engaging after only the first few sentences. I also love the elements of magic in this world which may otherwise be so close to the truth that it is too painful to read.

I like the cover, it is striking and memorable.
