A harrowing story of a world where girls are sold into 'welcome houses' where they're forced to work essentially as slaves. On their sixteenth birthday otherwise known as their 'Lucky Night', the girls are sold to the highest bidder and begin their life as courtesans. We are thrown into the story on the night of Clementine's lucky night as she is pampered and prepared for it. Families are led to believe that by selling their daughters into welcome houses, they're ensuring them safety, access to healthcare and the promise of never going hungry. The truth, however, is much darker and the girls are nothing more than slaves hoping for freedom. Luckily for Clementine, after accidentally killing the man that bought her, she is forced to escape with her sister and friends to avoid getting prosecuted for it. Their journey is not easy and they are faced with a multitude of obstacles on the way as they hope to find the mysterious Lady Ghost who is said to remove 'favours' which the girls are branded with in order to be easily identifiable as good luck girls.

Overall, I thought that the premise of the story was intriguing and captivating. I would've loved to know more about the girls' life in the welcome house as well as more background history. The book was fast-paced as it was full of action. I can't wait to see how the story progresses in the sequel.
