This book draws you in straight away, the little hints of magic from the lack of shadows to the favours growing on the necks of the girls leave you wanting to find out more. You engage with the feisty Aster and loyal Clementine and hope they beat the odds and escape the clutches of the house but what hope do they have in a world where they are unwelcome? You really hope they can get out of the clutches of Madame Fleur.

The author does not reveal too much about this world immediately allowing the story to unfold as you read, leaving questions that make you keen to read onwards to find out how it all fits together. How much does magic prevail in this world? Is it always used to control people?

It is interesting to see a fantasy book that has female protagonists that haven't had years of sword fighting training etc or who play the useless princess. Very keen to read further.
