Clementine is preparing for her first night after being sold for a high price. You join her as she gets ready for it, clinging to the advice her older sister gave to her about finding a song and not drinking whatever the Mother gives to her. Her body might belong to them but her mind doesn’t have to as Aster keeps mentioning.

I really liked how you dived into this uncertain world of Clementine as she prepared for something you knew was going to be awful but had no idea exactly what. I think the author has done a brilliant job of building up the suspense and tension in the opening. I also appreciated that the author didn’t spend time explaining things that were unfamiliar, I think openings can get a little dull when it’s explaining all of the unfamiliar things brought up. I’m interesting in seeing where the book leads, how Clementine will navigate her next steps.
