At first, after reading the blurb I was excited to read this book. It sounded right up my street. However I'm not instantly pulled in. I was left feeling a little uneasy when Clementine had her "Lucky night" and was left wondering what year the story was set in and in what place? It seems quite old fashioned and sexist. The story starts with a girl who, upon turning 16, is being prepped for her first night with a man - a man who has paid good money to experience Clementine. I was left wondering about Clementines upbringing. She talks about her older sister who gave her advice on how to get through this night. Is she part of a grooming cull? And who is Fleur, the woman who is preparing Clementine and making her look pretty?
I'm hoping it will get grittier as the chapters go on and it's just a little slow to get in to. I personally find it hard to stick to a book if I'm not drawn in after the first couple of chapters. Whilst I'm now blown away, I'm not ready to give up on the boom just yet!
