I really wanted to love The Good Luck Girls. A story set in a fantastical Wild West following a group of girls on the run? It sounded exactly up my street. Sadly, it didn't quite hit as many high notes as I hoped it would.

The main issue I had was that I felt the author tried to shoe-horn too many ideas into one novel. The world building was written in random info dumps and I struggled keep track of everything. Dustbloods, fairbloods, debt, welcome houses, a war, corrupt mine owners, vengeants... the list goes on. I really think the author could have cut out a few elements, because what we were left with felt unnecessarily complicated and hindered my enjoyment of the story.

Despite this, there were many good things that kept my interest going. It was well written, with some genuinely hard hitting moments. Although I found most of the characters a little bland, Violet was written brilliantly. Her transformation throughout the novel was subtle, and her changing relationship with Aster developed well. A promising first novel.
