I found this book hard to read but not because it was poorly written or wasn't engaging, it was just very difficult subject matter. The opening chapter in particular was a tough read but I have to say, the author has handled the subject material very sensitively. Sometimes too much effort can be put into the shock value of the actions and not enough attention paid to how events such as these affect the victim of the scenario and how it makes them feel. This book has so much depth to its characters and the relationship between the two sisters is really beautiful and again very well handled.
There is a definite fantasy and magic setting in this story but I feel more time and attention is put on the characters and their relationships and so it just feels really natural and they inhabit the world very naturally.
