Wasn’t my favourite

Firstly, I'm not the biggest fan of books where the characters are on the run constantly, but the synopsis intrigued me enough to pick this up. Unsurprisingly though, I enjoyed the novel more in the earlier stages when they were still at the House. I loved getting to know what life was like for the girls there, it was interesting and I felt content exploring this 'homelife'. Therefore, I think it just threw me a bit that they abruptly left, I would of loved more of those early chapters. I was also a bit disappointed that the novel opened following Clementine, but then switched to Aster from then on. I think it would've been nice if the story had been split between the two of them the whole way through.

Admittedly, Aster wasn't my favourite, I just didn't warm to her or agree with how she handled things at times. I actually really liked the rest of the cast and so it would of been amazing if there had consistently been another perspective, instead of just Aster's.
Clem was sweet and still had this pure innocence and hope that surrounded her. Mallow and Tansy, were Clem's inseparable best friends. Mallow was strong mentally and physically and didn't take anything too seriously, Tansy was quieter, more sensible and what they did took more of a toll on her conscience than the others. Zee was the stranger that they encountered and there was a big question mark over whether he could be trusted. He was kind and understanding and proved himself to be more than helpful, but he had his own reasons for doing what he did.

Then there's Violet, who was somewhat of a arch-enemy of Aster's. She was stuck up and liked to remind the girls that she was different to them. But like Zee, she had her own secrets and motivations. This was unlike anything I've read and it had some great ideas, I liked that these girls were fighting back against the more powerful and more specifically, the patriarchy. It was also brilliant that the author showed the effect that their work had on them mentally, the constant travelling and slower pace of the book just wasn't to my particular taste.
