"The Heretic's Mark" is the fourth book in the Jackdaw Mysteries series of novels by S W Perry. The stories are set in Elizabethan England, and this one begins with the queen's physician being executed for treason. Dr Nicholas Shelby faces a similar accusation of plotting to poison Queen Elizabeth I, and he and his new wife, Bianca, escape to the continent until he can be declared innocent of the charges made against him. They leave trusty Rose and Ned behind to oversee the re-building of the Jackdaw Tavern, amid their determination to help clear Nicholas's name.
We follow the couple's adventures from London to Bianca's hometown of Padua in Italy. Their eventful journey is full of tension and danger, with many surprising twists and turns, and a strange new companion who adds much drama to the tale.
As with all the other books in the series, this one is very well-written and a pleasure to read.
