I was a bit apprehensive to join this story at the fourth book in a series, but I needn't have worried. There is a strong sense of well developed back story to the characters, but it still made good reading as a stand alone tale. I may well go back to read more about the beginning of Nicholas and Bianca's relationship- they are interesting people and the dynamic between them is attractive.
I loved the detail of Elizabethan era life. The story is exciting and I particularly enjoyed encountering Galileo as part of the plot. It felt like hearing first hand about the ideas and politics surrounding the science of one of history's greatest thinkers.
The character of Hella is intriguing and her story and involvement in the plot adds another dimension of mystery and unease.
Overall, the book is beautifully written,
rich in detail but not at the expense of a well paced plot.
