The book opens with Dr Roderigo Lopez being taken from his prison to face a second trial as a traitor where he is found guilty of treason and hanged. We then learn of Dr Nicholas Shelby, a forward thinking physician, associated with spymaster Robert Cecil who finds himself under suspicion of being involved in treason too, being accused of attempting to poison the Queen. which leads to him and his new Italian wife Bianca, needing to flee for their lives.
Their escape route leads them to Padua and along the way they are joined by a strange young woman called Hella who predicts an impending apocalypse.
Their escape route is a dangerous venture and fraught with obstacles and Padua doesn't prove to be the safe haven they expected.
This isn't my normal genre but I found the book easy to get into and involving as we learn more about the sixteenth century and what a cruel time it was.
