It is a series, but you don't have to have read the rest of the books. I suppose this is the fourth book within this series.
The period is Elizabethan and a crime has been committed. The queen's physician has been executed for treason.
There are conspiracies, lies and you start to doubt everyone and anyone.
I would highly recommend this book and the other books in the series, this is the third book I have read. The author has clearly done a lot of research and doesn't go wild with theories about what could have happened at an Elizabethan court. Which I am often nervous about. The author has a wonderful style of writing and does leave each character with you rushing to start the next.
