S. W. Perry’s novels featuring physician Nicholas Shelby and Bianca Merton are some of my favourite historical mystery series. I have previously read The Saracen's Mark and loved it. Although The Heretic’s Mark is the fourth in the series, it can be enjoyed by new readers and established fans alike.

Nicholas and Bianca are the main characters in this story, but Rose and Ned Monkton also reappear in this novel - with a bigger, more important part in the story this time.

A historical mystery set in the reign of Elizabeth - not an era I know a lot about, but I enjoyed this period drama nonetheless and found S.W. Perry has researched the period adequately.

This novel follows Nicholas and Bianca on a great journey to clear his name of a wrongly accused conviction. While left behind to hold the fort, Ned takes it upon himself to do all he can to help Nicholas in his quest - to repay him. Although initially the result of a forced departure from England, before long Nicholas finds himself enjoying the journey through Europe.

As always, this novel has many twists and turns - nothing ever goes to plan.

I can’t wait for the next instalment in this series.
