I was really pleased to receive the next book in The Jackdaw Mysteries series by S. W. Perry, I've read the previous three books starting with The Angel's Mark and introducing the central protagonist Nicholas Shelby beginning in 1590's London. Shelby is a physician who gets involved in the hunt for a murderer; during this, he becomes involved with Bianca, a local tavern keeper. This starts off the series, which continues over various escapades, dangers and dramas until our latest book: The Heretic's Mark. The year is now 1594 and it's treason, spies and plotting central, with as always, a dash of murder!
Perry's descriptions are always really immersive and bring the past to life for the reader; the setting moves beyond London in this book and to Italy: there's a wealth of descriptive detail to delight it. The story would benefit from reading the previous books for character development, but it would work as a standalone - this series comes highly recommended.
