You can tell from page one this is going to be a good story. Within the first couple of pages I was hooked and that was just the set up. So that when we were introduced to our hero Nicholas Shelby we truly felt in Elizabethan London with its sights and smells and dangerous characters.
"Heretics Mark"is the fourth of the "Mark" or Jackdaw series but you do not need to have travelled with Nicholas and his wife Bianca through the previous novels. The story is very easy to follow and the fact that they reminisce about earlier events just makes you want pickup the other books.
I particularly enjoyed the escape along the Via Francigena pretending to be on pilgrimage and the best character has to be the strange religious fanatic Hella so well drawn and so mysterious. But that is not to forget the other story in this book of Rose and her wonderful husband Ned with their equally interesting story back in England. All the characters in this book are well drawn and believable and the story rattles on at quite a pace.

I always enjoy a good historical novel and this is one of the better ones.
