I can't believe that this is the author's debut novel as it is so good (so is his second novel Lie in wait which I also read a few weeks ago).
There are two distinct storylines - one about the eleven year old boy who sets fire to two older girls at his school after they humiliated them and was consequently sent to jail - the second about Ellen, who has inherited a property from Eudora Nash, a woman she has never heard of. I tried so hard to guess the connection between the two strands before I got to the end of the book but failed. The mystery and suspense was maintained right to the end of the book and I was not disappointed with the denouement.
