Well Gang, it’s time to get sleuthing. This read is about Crime Scene Investigator Kate, on a special 40th birthday holiday with her family and two closest friends. She finds out that her Irish husband has been unfaithful... with one of her very best friends, what a shocker. An excellent starter for 10.

Written from the first person perspective, you really delve into the dark folly that is Kate’s mind. She is a sly fox, taking down her husband’s phone password to get at his secret texts, there’s no suspense about being found out, just Kate getting information. She figures out why her husband Sean has been so distant and has started having showers recently, he’s having an affair.

Her husband Sean is an Irish stereotype, using words like Grand and Wee Big Lad to nail home the Celtic charms. He seems like a complex character, with sunshine on one side of his personality and a dark brooding monster on the other, the latter is taking hold as he sinks deeper into the quicksand of an extra-marital affair. I’m guessing that he is dually nice, but also unlikeable because he’s the one who dies, this to make us readers feel a little pleasure at the strange redemption.

However, I hope that there is a better twist, that it’s not one of Kate’s friends but one of her friend’s husbands and Sean kills him, he’s a devil so he is. Sean and Daniel could have a secret meeting on the cliff edge, when Daniel says he will tell Kate about their affair, Sean says “Right you are” and pushes him off the cliff.

This book’s got me thinking, it’s set up nicely and I would certainly enjoy playing Cludo as I turn the pages. A good start, let’s hope the rest lives up to the promise.
