If you're a fan of murder, Mystery and intrigue, set amongst four middle aged, middle class friends from their university days, then The Holiday has a lot to offer. The author paints a vivid picture of the beautiful French countryside and sets it against his rather less than complimentary portrayal of the main characters; who variously are shallow, conceited and bitter. If you can move past the references to 'Land Rovers, Soltan and Solaros (clearly the mark of the well to do Brit in 2019) then it becomes an enjoyable thriller. The first three quarters of the book sets up a web of false accusations that lures the reader in, already in the knowledge that a murderer is among them. The last quarter moves at a much faster place and leaves you aghast at the twist. A decent holiday read.
