There are quotes from Charles Dickens as a prologue, and he keeps a shadow presence throughout the story. There are lovely contrasts between the shadow world of tragedy, poverty and prostitution forced on women who have no other means of surviving, and the high society of the richest woman in London. The twists and turns of the story are beguiling. There is the stalker who frightens the lady, the poor girls released from prison after serving their terms, taken into a refuge that should enable them to adapt to a better life. But will it work? Great story line.
