Before reading the first pages, the cover interested me. I like its simplicity and elegance. Retrospectively, after reading the first 30 pages, it seems very fitting for the story.
I know of Stacey Halls previous work but haven't read it. I also have not read much historical fiction. The first 30 pages of this book, however, have made me want to explore both. The writing style engages me - I enjoyed the descriptions and it seems to fit genre; I feel it takes me back to the time the book is set in. Moreover, I'd love to read more about the characters and thorough enjoyed the introduction to the character of Martha.
