Our book club recently read The Familiars, a story set around the time of the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612 and a young mother who is desperate to give her affluent husband a son and heir. She enlists the help of a midwife who is alleged to meddle in witchcraft herself. The of lives of these two women become entwined as they try to help each other. It was very well received by The Royal Readers and I am personally now reading The Foundling, which is proving to be as enthralling. s
