Angela Burdett Coutts is a member of the famous banking family.
So with spare time and excess funds she and Charles Dickens funded Urania House, a place where lost and fallen women cast out by society could go to learn life tips and skills to start a new life in the colonies.
This is the story of some of those inmates of other institutions that are chosen to aid in this bold social experiment.
Yet all the girls have tabled lives and baggage from their pasts.
But ironically so does Angela, with a sinister stalker on the loose from prison making her life a living hell.
Though from diametrically opposes social backgrounds and millieu she finds friendship with the girls and learns their histories and tries to genuinely help them as a friend.
Yet an impasse is coming that will result in a dramatic finale and totally change all their lives for good.
This was another brilliant helping from the inimitable pen of Stacey Halls.
To me she is fast becoming the queen of historical fiction and I always look forward to a new novel from her.
