The Household by Stacey Halls is an enjoyable novel set in 1847 with a few different female lead characters. I enjoyed reading this book, though I did get confused by all the different characters. At first I kept looking back to refresh who was who but as I got into the story I found this did not matter as much.
Angela Burdett-Coutts is a millionairess who begins a home with Charles Dickens for young women rescued from prisons to train them in service and send them overseas.
Martha is one of the first group of women and is searching for her younger sister who has disappeared. She trusts a chaplain who misleads her however she finds strength to escape.
Josephine leaves to find her previous lover and ends up back in a life of crime until she also manages to escape.
Angela has a stalker who has made her life a misery for a decade and is dismayed to find out he is getting released from prison.
I enjoyed the book and all the different stories.
I would recommend it to anyone looking for a novel that is different with strong female characters.
