My first read of a Stacey Halls, I was keen to discover more about women and their lives in an 1800s setting. The book is centred around two locations, a benefactor and her seemingly privileged life, and the cottage she funded for girls who have 'fallen'.

I am aware of the gap between the wealthy and the rest of the population, even in this fictionalised setting it is quite stark. We quickly realise that money, social connections and possessions are not the most important way to be happy, it's more about family, a home and a purpose in life.

There are numerous characters, some based on real-life historical figures, others conjured up from murky depths. Some salubrious life paths are hinted at, others more overt such as prostitution, early factory work and domestic service. The hardships of women are graphic, at home and in society and how money is earned.
