An excellent read a brilliant balance between historical fiction and a who-done-it style mystery.
A particular draw for me was the specific period that was portrayed in The House Hold. Focussed on Victorian society this is an aspect of British history which I find is less commonly the focus of fiction and so was enjoyable as a new area to explore. Also the real life links to Dickens are very catching. As an aspect of Dickens life and work that was concealed even in his life time this is a very intriguing subject for the book.
The main characters are very likeable and draw you in to know their past as well as their future.
Finally, dealing with an aspect of life that is so important, the challenges faced by people who end up making difficult choices just to survive, this is a very topical read too. Really important to remind us that sometimes life is very hard.
An excellent read and highly recommended.
