I always enjoy reading books written by Stacey Halls, so when I saw The Household featured on Readers First, I decided to spend some of my points on getting myself a copy. I am glad that I did because I really enjoyed this story.
The story takes place in 1847 at a house called Urania Cottage which is situated near London. Urania Cottage is a big house that has been turned into a home for fallen women. This home is run by the governors who include a well known author, Charles Dickens, and a wealthy benefactress named Angela Burdett-Coutts. There is also a live in housekeeper who will look after the residents.
The women who get chosen to stay in Urania Cottage will be educated and taught how to run their own home some day. The people who run this home want to keep a low profile so they do not attract the wrong sort of publicity because many of the residents will have been in prison. This means that the women are not allowed out of the grounds of Urania Cottage until they leave.
