I thought that this was a beautifully crafted book about family, and the pressures life can throw at you.
The book follows the life of Johnny who owns an ice making factory in America, but who is diagnosed with a brain tumor. He is estranged from his son who lives in Johnny's native Scotland, but following his tumor diagnosis, he decides to make a trip to try and reconcile, and to meet his granddaughter for the first time.
As well as Johnny's story, the book also has chapter written from the points of view of his current wife, ex wife, his son and other employees at the factory. This could be jarring, but the book is so well written that it all seems to blend seemlessly and made it a really enjoyable read. I would thoroughly recommend this book.
My only negative is that I don't think the cover does it any favours...its a bit bland and dull, and I couldn't see how the pictures chosen related to the story. However, please don't let the cover put you off, this is a lovely, lovely book.
