This starts as a story of one man’s search for redemption in so far as he tries to make up with his son after having been diagnosed with a brain tumour. However it soon becomes much more as his story and that of his wider family and work colleagues become increasingly enmeshes as does the future of his ice factory.
There is a lot of humour in this book which is full of well-drawn and fully developed characters who each in their own right embark on their own journey of discovery as the book progresses. As the book ends they have all changed and become more rounded as individuals and have all made significant changes to their life journey.
I could relate a lot to Johnny the main character, with his West coast of Scotland upbringing and his inability to show his emotions. That said the way he tries to address this is both funny and uncomfortable at times and this adds to the poignancy of the novel.
A very well written book that is well worth reading.
