The Ice House is a story about Johnny and Pauline, the owners of an ice factory and their relationship with those around them. Johnny has had a falling out with his heroin addict son Corran and hasn't spoken to him for the last year.
When Johnny has a health scare and needs brain surgery he decides to fly to Scotland to try and patch things up with his son who is now a father himself. He brings Chemal, his 17 year old neighbour with him as a driver. At first, Corran is indifferent to his Dad and gives the impression that Johnny needn't have bothered visiting him. Then on the last day of Johnny's visit an incident happens that brings the whole family together and father and son finally have a much needed chat.
This book doesn't end in a happily ever after but more a "alls well for now scenario" which is quite refreshing and leaves it open to a sequel.
