It took me a while to really get into The Ice House, but this turned out to be a good, very descriptive novel, full of interesting characters.

Johnny's life seems to be falling apart. He won't speak to his estranged son, who is a recovering drug addict. He is in danger of losing his business, and facing financial ruin, following an accident at the ice factory which he co-owns with his second wife. Then, to add to all his woes, he discovers he has a brain tumour.

Now, this may make this sound like a miserable read, but it really isn't. The characters are well described and, mainly, likeable. There is lots of humour throughout the book, with stories told from different viewpoints, and the ending is quite satisfying.

The cover is lovely, too, and I would thoroughly recommend this book. I look forward to reading more from Laura Lee Smith.
