So glad I read this!
I loved this contemporary family drama, it really turned into a compelling read that I thoroughly enjoyed. The book has many great characters and the Ice Factory is an unusual setting. To be honest I wasn't sure how much I was going to enjoy a novel about a business in trouble but soon found I needed to know what would happen to the characters!
The book covers lots of issues including racism, social inequalities and drug addiction, but this doesn't mean it is a heavy or hard read. The book is full of fabulous wit and humour.
The Ice House is full of contrasts too which I enjoyed such it being part set in Florida and part on the West Coast of Scotland. The locations were described in a realistic way rather than being picture perfect which I find often happens where Scotland is the location. Also liked the way the author used dialects, they didn't come across as too forced.
All in all I thought this was a great novel and I'll be watching out for more by
Laura Lee Smith in the future.
