Johnny is, living in Jacksonville with his wife Pauline. They own an ice factory which they bought from Pauline’s dad. Johnny was brought up in the slum tenements of Scotland and was determined to escape, leaving his first wife and son behind.
Now grown up his son is a drug addict with a child of his own but is estranged from Johnny, mainly due to his failed attempts at rehab.
Johnny is beset by many problems with his company, due to the machinery being old and also the new regulations of health and safety. He becomes ill and is possibly suffering from a brain tumour.
I immediately liked Johnny and hoped that he would survive all the problems he was facing. The other characters are well rounded and I was intrigued to k ow their stories and how they interacted with Johnny.
I am a big fan of Ann Tyler and Celest Ng and this book is written in the same vein.
