"The Illumination of Ursula Flight" is a wonderful work of historical fiction, set during the restoration period. It chronicles the life of a feisty young woman, Ursula Flight, from the moment of her birth, throughout her childhood and early marriage to an older man, and her subsequent journey to London and her time as an actress and playwright in Drury Lane.

The first thing that drew me to this unique book is the wonderful cover, which is so evocative of the era in which the book is set. The story itself is beautifully illustrated, and interspersed with notes from Ursula's almanac, various lists and musings, together with scripts from her plays. It's a quirky, well-written book: very descriptive and a bit saucy in parts, and full of wit and humour.

I loved the book and hope that there will be a sequel, as I felt that Ursula's story was just beginning when the delightful novel came to an end.
