I'll be honest here... half way through I almost gave up on this book. I found the story quite predictable and the main character a little underdeveloped and not particularly pleasant. I also thought the period authenticity was lacking initially.
However as the book progressed and once I reached the point at which the protagonist was grown up, I began to enjoy the novel much more, it felt almost like the author found her flair and started to inject much more personality into Ursula herself.
Overall, entertaining and definitely witty in places but I still can't quite bring myself to agree to the claims lauded against this book as a "feminist romp" - it just didn't have enough of a gutsy feel for me!
